On September 21-22, 2024, Fo Guang University's Department of Buddhist Studies hosted the third "Sino-Tibetan Buddhist Translator Training and Translation Workshop" as part of the Ministry of Education's deep cultivation initiative. Nearly 50 participants from across Taiwan attended the event, which aimed to cultivate translation talent and promote the preservation of Buddhist texts.
Led by Professor Wang Yal Sonam, an expert in Tibetan Buddhist history and translation, the workshop featured four major topics: Tibetan grammar and Sino-Tibetan translation, translation perspectives, challenges, and Sanskrit and Sino-Tibetan translation. Distinguished speakers included Lharampa Khensur Rinpoche, Lharampa Namdrol Rinpoche, and experts from various universities.
The workshop focused on the technical challenges of translation, emphasizing the importance of accuracy, fluency, and elegance. Participants engaged in lively discussions and received practical training. Attendees expressed appreciation for the insights and inspiration provided, with many praising the instructors’ expertise and passion. The event concluded with a tour of the university and certificates of completion, highlighting the ongoing significance of Buddhist scripture translation.
