My Journey in Buddhist Studies at Fo Guang University
見理法師(大二)Venerable Jianli (Sophomore)

Studying in the Department of Buddhist Studies at Fo Guang University has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. I come from Malaysia, and coming here has given me a chance to grow not only academically, but also personally and spiritually. In our program, we start by building a solid foundation in Buddhist studies. We learn about the history of Buddhism from India and follow how it spread and developed through different Chinese dynasties. These courses really help us understand how Buddhist teachings have changed and adapted across cultures and history. It’s a great way to develop your own academic interests while really diving deeper into Buddhist
philosophy and traditions.

What makes this department really stand out is that learning isn’t just about sitting in class. Inspired by the vision of Venerable Master Hsing Yun and the spirit of Humanistic Buddhism, we focus on combining study and practice. This means we don’t just learn about Buddhist teachings; we also try to live them. For example, we have morning and evening chanting, cooking and meal-service sessions where students prepare and serve foods together. It may seem simple, but it teaches responsibility, teamwork, and mindfulness. This is what we call “practice and understanding together”—putting what we learn into action every day.

Lately, some of our group assignments have started exploring how Buddhism can connect with the modern world, especially in the age of AI. For example, we’ve tried writing scripts, creating videos and digital projects using AI tools to share Buddhist teachings in new and creative ways. It can be a bit challenging at first, but it’s really exciting to see how technology can help us express the Dharma in ways that are meaningful today. These experiences make me realize that ancient wisdom can stay relevant in a rapidly changing world and even inspire new ways of thinking and learning.

Another thing I really love is the international environment. I’ve met friends from Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, and more. Studying with classmates from different countries makes discussions and group projects so interesting. Everyone brings their own experiences and ideas, which really opens your mind and helps you see Buddhism from a bigger, global perspective. Plus, it’s a great way to learn about other cultures and make friends from all over the world.

Life in Jiaoxi makes the experience even better. It’s a peaceful little town with mountains and fresh air, very different from the busy places many of us come from. After class, you can take a walk with friends and enjoy the night view at the sports complex, practice archery together, or go hiking on the nearby trails over the weekend. These simple moments make student life here really fun and memorable. The calm environment is perfect not just for studying, but also for reflecting and discovering more about yourself.

In a world that is changing faster than ever, studying here reminds me that ancient wisdom can guide modern life. For me, studying here isn’t just about learning Buddhism—it’s about finding a meaningful way to live. It’s about learning to be more aware, compassionate, and understanding. The Department of Buddhist Studies at Fo Guang University really reflects the vision of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, encouraging students to bring Buddhist wisdom into everyday life and make a positive difference in the world. I’m really grateful for the chance to study here, and I think it’s a wonderful place for anyone who wants to explore Buddhism while also learning more about themselves and the world around them.
