To enhance their language proficiency and broaden their international horizons, Venerable Zhi Quan, Venerable Miao Ji, Ms. Deng Ting-Yu, and Ms. Zhang Gui-Hua from the Department of Buddhist Studies participated in a summer Japanese language program at the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Osaka Japanese Language Education Center from July 22 to August 8. During the program, in addition to intensive Japanese language learning, they actively engaged with students from various countries, expanding their cultural understanding and enriching their learning experience.
As part of the study tour, the group paid a special visit to Vice President Ms. Ikuko Isoda of the institution, where they engaged in lively discussions on Buddhist culture and language education, establishing positive academic ties. Beyond coursework, Fo Guang Shan Osaka Temple hosted a special presentation about the Department of Buddhist Studies on August 3 following a Dharma service. The session introduced the department’s academic features, curriculum design, and international learning environment, receiving enthusiastic feedback from the local community.
The itinerary also included upcoming visits to Bukkyo University on August 5 and Ryukoku University on August 7, aimed at deepening exchanges with Buddhist educational institutions in Japan and creating opportunities for future collaboration in Buddhist studies and language education.
This exchange program to Japan fully reflects the department’s educational ethos of “rooting in the Dharma while integrating cross-cultural practice.” It also lays a solid foundation for students’ future language development and international engagement.
