Since 2012, the MA program in Chinese track and the PhD program are offered. The PhD program is the first program in Buddhist studies in Taiwan. With programs including undergraduate, MA (both Chinese and English tracks), and PhD, students will receive a complete academic curriculum and discipline in Buddhist studies while both academic discipline and practice of Buddhism are equally emphasized. Students will be trained academically to be able to do academic research and teaching in the field of Buddhist studies. We keep our promise to connect Chinese Buddhism with humanistic Buddhism of the contemporary time in connection with academic study worldwide. With the Center for Buddhist Studies, which is directly under administrated by the university, our department will play an important role on the study of Chinese Buddhism in Asia.
ObjectivesWith academic discipline, the department aims at enabling students to comprehend critically and apply knowledge of their learning on Buddhism in various perspectives. We also train our students to live in a life with Buddhist ethics as basis from cultural perspective. We not only enhance students to have a strong ability on independent study, academic research and critical thinking from various perspectives, but also that we value students’ education and self-discipline on both internally personal cultivation and an inner inspiration with a clearly awakening knowing. Our objectives are:
a. Train students for leadership,
b. Students will be able to practically teach Buddhism in various perspectives,
c. Students will be specialized in academic research on Buddhism,
d. Students will be able to possess a skill of communication in cross-fields.
